Gearbox whine on my Jetta, trying to figure out what it means

There's a whine coming from the front of my 2017 Jetta that changes pitch with speed. It's most noticeable between 60 and 90, then either goes away or gets drowned out by road noise after that. It's not affecting how the car drives, shifts feel fine, no warning lights. I had a mechanic listen to it briefly and he said it could be the gearbox but he didn't seem sure, which wasn't reassuring. I found gearboxrepairsharjah.ae/brands/volkswagen while searching and I'm thinking about getting a proper diagnostic, but I'd like to know if a speed dependent whine is usually gearbox related or if it could be a wheel bearing or something simpler. Anyone had this before? I don't want to jump to the worst conclusion if it's something basic.
